YEREVAN, OCTOBER 6, NOYAN TAPAN. The delegation of
Armenia's judicial power headed by the acting chairman of the
Cassation Court Davit Avetisian on October 5 received the
chairman of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) Jean-Paul
Costa accompanied by Judge Alvina Gyulumian representing Armenia
in the ECHR.
D. Avetisian presented court and legal reforms implemented
in Armenia and gave examples from the judicial practice when
based on the ECHR practice, a court, in particular the Cassation
Court, made decisions that set a precedence for future cases and
have had a pivotal significance for protection of human rights
and fundamental freedoms in the country.
Spokeswoman for the RA Cassation Court Alina Yengoyan told
NT that the ECHR chairman in his turn said that the activities
of the RA Cassation Court "quenched his thirst" as their
objective is that the Convention member states appreciate
rulings of the ECHR and will be guided by them.
Jean-Paul Costa attached importance to adoption of the
Judicial Code in Armenia because it will prevent possible
decisions against the Republic of Armenia from being taken by
the EGHR.
