YEREVAN, JULY 15, NOYAN TAPAN. "The fear to look the truth
straight in the eye is the cause of the Armenian-Turkish
conflict", the German film director of Turkish descent Fatih
Akin said at the July 13 meeting with reporters. He presented
his film "Sole Kitchen" at the Golden Apricot 7th International
Film Festival. "Fear gnaws one's heart, and in my homeland this
fear has gnawed many hearts. The only way of normalizing
Armenian-Turkish relations is to overcome this fear. I am
convinced that cinema has the power of overcoming fear and I am
also convinced that this fear will be overcome one day," the
film director stated. In his words, if he ever addresses the
Armenian-Turkish subject, boxing will be at the heart of that
theme: fond of this kind of sport, F. Akin is among the fans of
Armenian boxers Susie Ketikian and Arthur Abraham.
F. Akin said that he had watched Eric Fridler's "Disaster"
documentary which was demonstrated in Germany and caused quite a
stir there. "I was familiar with most of the film text as I
already read Wolfgang Gust's book "The Armenian Genocide" that
contains all those documents", he said.
