YEREVAN, November 22 (Noyan Tapan). The residents living in
the neighbourhood of Khachatur Abovian's house-museum in Kanaker
built a hen-coop and summer-houses in the territory of the
museum, as well as turned it into a place of brawls and
drinking-bout. Hovhannes Zatikian, Director of the museum,
informed a Noyan Tapan correspondent that during one of the
brawls the great writer's monument was damaged from fire-arms
shot. Besides, according to the director, they steal
electricity from the museum in winter for the purpose of heating
and in summer for the purpose of making tins.
As a result of this the family house, tonratoon and the old
museum building opened in 1938 were considerably damaged.
H.Zatikian said that 15 watchmen guarding the building have
changed during the period of his tenure. "Nobody wants to expose
his life to danger because of several thousand drams."
According to H.Zatikian, unless urgent measures are taken
not only the exhibition-halls will suffer from the future
rain-water and thaw, but the museum's existence will be
endangered. According to the director, he has written numerous
applications, applied to numerous bodies but nobody responded.
And next year the 200th anniversary of the great writer will be
celebrated. Finally H.Zatikian applied to RA Prime Minister.
According to the director, a sum in the amount of 3.5-4m drams
is necessary for reconstruction of museum walls, gate and
building.
H.Zatikian also said that lately the room after Abovian was
closed, the school named after Khachatur Abovian was renamed,
his bust was destroyed in the Tartu (formerly Dorpat)
University. "Maybe this is the consequence of the events taking
place in Abovian's homeland at present, indifference and the
position of non-implication in our own culture, literature and
history," the museum director said.
