COCHIN, November 30 (Noyan Tapan). Armenian representative
Tigran L. Petrosian was a great success in the World U-20
Championship on Chess held in the Indian city of Cochin. The
Yerevan grand master registered eight victories, drew three
matches, had two defeats in 13 rounds of the competitions held
by the Swiss system. He earned 9.5 points and shared
second-third plares with Chinese chess-player Zun Jao, who had
the same standing. As Tigran had higher tournament coefficients,
he placed second and was awarded with a silver medal. And
Indian well-known grand master Pentala Harikricha became the
world champion. He earned 10 points out of possible 13.
Acquiring the title of the world vice champion of U-20
chess-players is a great achievement for Tigran L. Petrosian. In
general, 2004, which was announced by FIDE the Year of world
nine-time champion Tigran Petrosian, was a great success for his
junior namesake. In early 2004, Tigran showed high standing in
the Moscow international tournament "Aeroflot-Open", then he
successfully participated in the competitions held in Iran, as
well as in different tournaments. According to specialists,
Tigran L. Petrosian is likely to be among the strongest
chess-players of Armenia in the near future.
