MOSTAR, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Jan 18 (AFP) - The January 20
deadline for the reunification of Mostar has been "de facto"
postponed, a spokesman for the city's EU administrator said
Wednesday.
The Saturday deadline "has already been de facto put back,"
Dragan Gasic, said, adding however that freedom of movement
within the divided city must be absolutely guaranteed by January
28 at the latest.
This date was set last Sunday during a visit to Mostar by
German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel, who announced a two-week
"moratorium" during which EU administrator Hans Koschnick would
be designated as an "arbitrator."
When the divided city was placed under EU administration in
July 1994, the administrator was given no coercive power over
Mostar's citizens and was mandated only to make suggestions or
offer assistance.
Under the Dayton peace accords for Bosnia signed last
month, the city's two police forces were to unite by Saturday as
the first stage of Mostar's total reunification.
