YEREVAN Jan. 09, (NT, DPA) - Inmates in prisons around
Turkey have ended revolts that began last Thursday, setting 29
hostages free, the Turkish Human Rights Association (IHD)
announced Tuesday.
The prisoners agreed to end their uprising after
authorities removed Istanbul's Umraniye prison director and a
deputy prosecutor from their duties and opened an investigation
into the brutal crushing of a revolt there last Thursday. The
inmates were also promised better prison conditions, Kanar said.
Three inmates died Thursday when political prisoners held at
Umraniye revolted in protest against extreme conditions and
brutality by security forces. Sixty-seven people, including
inmates, guards and gendarmerie, were injured.
