CONSERVATIVE ELECTED SPEAKER OF RUSSIAN UPPER HOUSE

MOSCOW, Jan 23 (AFP-NT) - The upper house of the Russian
parliament, the Federation Council, Tuesday elected as its
speaker Yegor Stroyev, a conservative former apparatchik,
ITAR-TASS news agency reported.
Stroyev, 58, head of the Oryol regional administration in
central Russia, was elected by 147 votes to 19 with two spoilt
ballots, at the opening session of the new Federation Council.
