CASES OF DEATH REGISTERED IN ARMENIAN ARMY IN 2005

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 28, NOYAN TAPAN. According to the data
of the Helsinki Committee of Armenia, 153 cases of death, mainly
murders or suicides, were registered in the Armenian army in
2005. According to the same source, in 1994-1997, about 800
cases of servicemen's death were registered in the Armenian
army. In 1999-2002 the number of death cases in the army
started to decrease: according to the data of state proper
bodies, in 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 the number of death cases
made 151, 86, 72 and 42, respectively.
The data of RA Defence Ministry and Military Prosecutor's
Office in their turn are contradictory. According to the Defence
Ministry, 40 cases of death were registered in the army in 2003,
according to the Military Prosecutor's Office, 48 and according
to the data of the Helsinki Committee of Armenia, 61 cases.
According to the data of state structures, 38 cases of
death were registered in RA Armed Forces subdivisions in 2004:
no unofficial data were collected for that year.
According to the answer given by RA Foreign Ministry to the
Human Rights Watch organization's report, 14 cases of death were
registered in the Armenian army in 2005 and according to the
data sent to the Helsinki Committee by the Military Prosecutor's
Office, 28, according to RA Defence Ministry, 89 cases of death
and according to the data collected by the Helsinki Committee of
Armenia, 153 cases of death.
By the way, according to the Helsinki Committee of Armenia,
servicemen who died from being wounded or getting corporal
injuries were not included in the state structures' statistics
on cases of death in the army.
