LITTLE CHESS PLAYERS OF ARMENIA BECOME GOLDEN AND SILVER
MEDAL-WINNERS OF INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT OF ATHENS

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 7, NOYAN TAPAN. 4 pupils (trainer Ararat
Santrian) of the chess sport school of the Yerevan Olympic shift
participated in the "Nikia-2005" festival held in Athens. 337
chess players of 11 countries, what, according to the organizers
was a record, participated in traditional, 13 in number,
competitions. All participants played in one tournament, and the
places were carculated for 4 groups: 12, 16, 20 years old and
grown ups.
Children from Yerevan played perfectly. Tigran S.Petrosian
and Ruben Gatrchian got 6 points each at 9 rounds of the
tournament held in Swiss play order and took correspondingly the
1st and 2nd places in the group of those of 12 years old. Tigran
was rewarded with golden and Tuben with silver medals. Besides,
Tigran was given the cup of winner of the age group. Taron
Davtian (5 points) and Gevorg Abovian (4 points) also played
successfully. They also took high places at their age groups.
Trainer Ararat Santrian didn't stay behand his pupils: he showed
a rather high result, 6.5 points. To recap, a great number of
skillful chess players played in the Athens tournament: 5 grand
masters, 12 international masters, few FIDE masters were among
the participants.
As Ararat Santrian informed the Noyan Tapan correspondent,
the organizers of the "Nikia-2005" made members of the
delegation of Armenia participants of the reception organized
after the end of the competitions and invited them to the
festival to be held nex year.
