Yerevan, 25 October 2013 – Today within the framework of UN Day commemoration over 150 university students, youth members of civil society as well as civic activists were hosted in the UN Open House Day event. The United Nations Country Team with the leadership of UN Resident Coordinator Bradley Bussetto met with the young guests and briefed them about the work of the United Nations in Armenia, talked about the important role the United Nations has in supporting the country’s efforts to advance sustainable human development and achieve the nationalized Millennium Development Goals.
 
The participants of the event were very enthusiastic about this initiative and they raised agency specific multiple questions that the specialized agencies from UNCT replied. The range of questions were related to poverty and employment, migration and health, gender equality versus gender identity, environmental problems etc. All issues and questions were hot topics for Armenia and towards which the UN system agencies have specific projects being implemented jointly with the Government of Armenia and partners.
 
Bradley Bussetto mentioned also that since the establishment of the UN Office in Armenia and which is already 21 years, the UN family with its specialized agencies, funds, programs and departments had and will continue to have its tangible input in the advancement of the country.
 
Special stalls in the UN House Lobby with publication materials of UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNHCR, WFP, DPI, WHO, FAO, UNIDO and IOM were displayed for distribution. Secretary-General’s video message as well as other video clips were screened on the Lobby monitor.
 
The enthusiastic participants of the event were very happy to be hosted in the UN House and thanked the organizers to initiate such an informative and comprehensive meeting. 
 
On 24 October 1945, sixty-eight years ago, the founding Charter of the UN entered into force. The UN Office in Armenia was opened in December 1992, after Armenia became a member of the United Nations in March 1992.
