Dear Sir/Madam,
The decision to hold the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29/CMP 19/CMA 6) in Baku can be seen as an encouragement of Azerbaijan's criminal behavior. It also disregards international norms and values.
Such an event is planned to take place in a country accused of human rights violations, war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and the implementation of genocidal policies. This is why the Green Union of Armenia opposes holding the Climate Summit in Baku.
In 2022, Azerbaijan attacked Artsakh once again, capturing a significant part of its territory, and immediately imposed a total blockade on the population of Artsakh. More than a year later, under the threat of death, Azerbaijan forced the mass expulsion of 120,000 Armenians, depriving them of their millennia-old homeland.
The European Parliament called Azerbaijan’s armed intervention "ethnic cleansing" and urged a complete review of relations with Baku.
The decision to hold COP29 in Baku becomes even more controversial as Azerbaijan continues its policies, now against the Republic of Armenia, with Azerbaijani forces occupying territories from the regions of Syunik and Gegharkunik.
Holding the Climate Summit in Baku will damage the reputation of the Climate Organization.
We call on all freedom-loving countries to boycott holding the summit in Baku. Holding such a prestigious conference in Baku would be seen as silent consent and even sympathy toward Azerbaijan’s genocidal policies.
The climate crisis will not be solved by political games and trade-offs. It will only be solved through love for nature and adherence to high human moral values.
Yours faithfully,
