Our hero, Edgar, has over ten years of experience in a major jewelry company. He speaks four languages and has mastered the art of organizing a successful sales process. In our interview, he shares his experience, his view of the profession, and the secrets behind his achievements.
— Edgar, hello. How did you enter the jewelry business?
My journey began in 2013, when I joined the EURO DIAMOND By MONTUR IS team as a jewelry craftsman and gemologist.
— What exactly did your work involve?
I have always been fascinated by working with precious metals and gemstones - creating something beautiful and flawless. I also enjoyed working with clients who had high standards and complex requests. At EURO DIAMOND, there was plenty of this kind of work.
In my daily routine, I studied, evaluated, and identified precious stones and metals. My work included determining a gemstone’s characteristics - its color, clarity, weight, and cut - as well as verifying authenticity. And of course, my favorite part was modeling the jewelry piece: creating sketches, casting, processing, and the detailed handwork with metal and stones. It’s the most creative stage, which is why I enjoy it the most.
— In 2017 you obtained a strong managerial position as a Director of the Export and Import Department. What helped you grow professionally?
First of all, the willingness to take responsibility to achieve results. I always tried not just to complete tasks, but to think about the business and how to improve performance. Teamwork is also extremely important. Success in any business depends not only on the manager, but on the atmosphere within the team. My goal is to create conditions where every employee feels important and valued.
— What does the daily routine of a successful retail manager look like?
It is constant, persistent work. I have to ensure the efficient organization of the sales process, meet sales and growth targets, and control financial reporting. At the same time, I still take part in the jewelry production itself — gemstone work. When a project is for a global brand and demands the highest level of expertise and attention to detail, I personally double-check everything before the project moves to the next stage.
So organization, management, and controlling the effective work of the entire team are essential parts of daily tasks. I also oversee the support and development of existing clients, as well as attracting new ones — meetings, negotiations, commercial offers, signing contracts. I handled order processing and product shipment. And that is only part of what I had to manage.
— You are fluent in several languages: Armenian, Turkish, English, and Russian. Does this help in your work?
Definitely. In the jewelry industry we often work with international clients, and being able to speak the client’s native language immediately creates trust and makes communication more comfortable.
— Are there achievements that you consider the most significant in your career?
I am proud that I represented the company and demonstrated high-level expertise in negotiations on projects with such renowned brands as Chopard and Cartier, which led to successful deals for our company. I especially remember the project of creating a tiara for Miss World Armenia, where I was assigned a key role in the design of the piece. After that, I received recognition from high-ranking officials and organizers.
I am also proud that in 2022 I represented our company at an international jewelry exhibition in Istanbul, where we were ranked among the top five companies in Southwest Asia. It is especially rewarding to know that my work contributed to something meaningful. I managed to participate in 198 jewelry exhibitions around the world, over 239 business visits abroad, and successfully led our brand to sustainable growth and consistently high results. I also helped form a strong team of like-minded professionals who put their heart into their work every day.
— And finally, what do you see in your professional future?
I am open to new challenges and always strive to learn and develop. I want to continue growing in management and expand the scope of my responsibilities.
— All that remains is to wish you success! Thank you for such an open and interesting conversation.
