Between Washington and Moscow: The Secret Geopolitical Tug-of-War over Armenia’s Future

In a recent, highly provocative interview hosted by the Noyan Tapan media network, Gagik Sarukhanyan, co-chair of the World Organization for the Liberation of Armenia, offered a stark analysis of Armenia’s current geopolitical trajectory. Speaking at length on Noyan Tapan, Sarukhanyan outlined a bold vision where Armenia is caught in a dangerous web of Russian manipulation, kept afloat only by assertive American intervention, and facing a critical juncture in the approaching national elections.
Sarukhanyan began by addressing global geopolitics, specifically dismissing the popular notion of a severe, unbridgeable conflict between the United States and the European Union. He characterized these rumors as a deliberate "Russian narrative" designed to be continuously chewed over by the public without any real substance. He argued that despite President Donald Trump's harsh or unconventional rhetoric, the core values and geopolitical objectives of the US and the EU remain fundamentally united. According to Sarukhanyan, the United States stands as the planet's ultimate guarantor of global freedom, and its foreign policy actions are driven by a foundational commitment to liberty and human rights.
The Russian Masterplan and the "Zangezur" Threat
A significant portion of the interview was dedicated to a fierce critique of Russia's role in the Caucasus. Sarukhanyan accused Russian intelligence of treating Armenia as a captive, enslaved state. He claimed that the recent loss of Artsakh and the military incursions near Jermuk were not accidents, but part of a calculated, joint Russian-Turkish project. According to his analysis, this overarching plan aimed to sever Armenia in half to create the "Zangezur corridor." Ultimately, he claimed, the plot envisioned the absorption of southern Armenia into "Western Azerbaijan," while reducing the northern remainder of the country to a newly named "South Caucasian Republic" governed by a Russian official.
When evaluating Armenia's domestic leadership, Sarukhanyan presented a highly critical view of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. He painted Pashinyan, along with other prominent domestic political figures, as "Russian agents" acting under Moscow's influence. However, he explained the Prime Minister's recent pro-Western diplomatic shifts as the result of forceful American pressure. Sarukhanyan claimed that the US is essentially "holding him by the ears" and forcing him to sign documents that align with Western, democratic interests.
He suggested that Washington supports Pashinyan not out of genuine admiration, but as a pragmatic choice—the lesser of two evils when compared to outright pro-Russian opposition factions. Furthermore, Sarukhanyan credited strict American diplomatic intervention, rather than Russian peacekeeping, for preventing a full-scale Turkish invasion of Armenian territory in the past.
Regional Dominoes: Iran, Turkey, and Armenia's Destiny
Sarukhanyan views Armenia as the crucial geographical and political barrier preventing the realization of a pan-Turkic "Turan". Looking at the broader region, he predicted that the United States will eventually act to "liberate" Iran from its current Islamic regime. He claimed this regime is deeply unpopular among an Iranian population that he believes largely aligns with its ancient Zoroastrian roots rather than strict Islamic rule. He argued that only after Iran is freed from its oppressive government structure can Armenia achieve true independence and avoid being an isolated "island" surrounded by hostile, authoritarian regimes.
The Upcoming Elections and a Call to Action As Armenia approaches parliamentary elections in the coming months, Sarukhanyan expressed deep frustration with the political landscape. He noted that his own organization possesses a comprehensive program to transform Armenia into an atomic and technological powerhouse, focusing on robotics and semiconductor production. However, he candidly admitted that his movement will likely not participate in the upcoming elections due to a severe lack of financial backing.
He concluded the interview with a stark challenge to the public and wealthy Armenians to financially support genuine pro-independence movements. Without such grassroots and financial backing, he warned, the nation risks being led down a path of destruction by political forces that remain loyal to foreign authoritarian capitals.
