The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games, is a winter multi-sport event scheduled to take place between 9 and 24 February 2018. Three candidates have applied to host the games: Annecy, France; Munich, Germany; and Pyeongchang, South Korea. The winning bid will be announced on 6 July 2011 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), after the 123rd IOC Session in Durban.
Munich has previously hosted the 1972 Summer Olympics, with some of the events proposed to take place in the 1936 Winter Olympics host Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Pyeongchang has bid twice before, and lost only marginally to Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014. Some of Annecy's events would take place in 1968 host Grenoble. It is the first time since the bids for the 1988 Winter Olympics those only three bids were made.
