The fence of Artsakh Gandzasar monastery complex is being restored without the preservation of the medieval breath of the monastery. Monument scientist Samvel Karapetyan declared about this at the meeting with journalists held on July 13today, noting that such a reconstruction of the fence is unacceptable because it violated the principle of rehabilitation of the cultural values. According to him, the Gandzasar fence is a structure dating back to the 13th century. It was restored in 17-18th century, and then in 20th century. Today it is being restored unter the patronage of Armenian businessman Levon Hayrapetyan who lives in Russia, but the spirit and style of the monastery is not being preserved. “When we deal with uneducated society we have very bad results, it the reconstruction is not ended then tomorrow we will have only the fence of Gandzasar church 2011,” S. Karapetyan told the journalists showing them the photographs of Shoshka monastery in Askeran region restored under the patronage of Samvel Babayan. The monastery has lost its image after the reconstruction. S. Karapetyan is going to organize a photo exhibition titled “Azerbaijan is an enemy to civilization.” Ambassadors of a number of countries will be invited. “Armenian monuments were being destroyed in Azerbaijan in the Soviet era, during the Artsakh war and afterwards. Azerbaijan’s attitude to Armenian monuments is too hostile. It’s first of all our loss, but also the loss of all civilized humanity,” Samvel Karapetyan stated. It was noted that Gandzasar monastery is not included in the list of world cultural heritage of UNESCO. And if such a question is raised Gandzasar will be left out due to the “new restored fence”.
