ARMENIAN MALE CHESS PLAYERS COMPETE AT EUROPEAN TEAM
CHAMPIONSHIP BELOW THEIR CAPACITY

GOTEBORG, AUGUST 8, NOYAN TAPAN. The 15th Team Chess
Championship with the participation of 40 male and 26 female
teams finished in Goteborg (Sweden). The competitions were held
in nine rounds. A new order of point counting was used during
the championship for the first time - 2 points were awarded for
a team win, 1 point - for a draw.
As a result of the 9-day competitions, the male team of the
Netherlands and the female team of Poland became European
champions.
The Armenian male team competed below their capacities. In
terms of the team players' ratings, Armenia was 4th and was
considered one of the championship favorites, but the team
members played with variable success, (4 wins, 2 draws, 3
defeats), which prevented the team from taking a high place. The
Armenian team earned 10 ponts and placed 12th to 20th position,
and thnaks to additional coefficients - 12th position.
The Armenian female team was more successful at the
championship. They earned 11 points and shared 5th to 7th
positions with the teams of Ukraine and Romania (by coefficients
- 6th position).
Two Armenian chess players - Ashot Anastasian and Lilit
Galoyan were awarded prizes for showing good results as reserve
players. Anastasian became 3rd by earning 5 out of 7 points, and
Galoyan - 2nd by earning 7 out of 8 points.
