YEREVAN, 17 JUNE, NOYAN TAPAN: The opening of foreign language schools in Armenia will mean leading the functioning of Armenian language to passivity,” announced ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan during a June 17 press conference.
According to her, if the main investigate, analytical, administrative and legal thought develops in an environment where the speakers express thoughts through the foreign language, then Armenian language will no longer be applied in those spheres; in other words, Armenian will serve as a daily conversational language and that will lead to the subordination of the language.
According to literary critic Vardan Devrikyan, who is strictly against the opening of foreign language schools, the country’s representatives of education showed that “either they don’t have enough will to teach foreign languages at a high level in schools or they transferred the social discrimination and negligence in our lives to the school.” According to Devrikyan, the opening of foreign language schools is inadmissible and the greatest humiliation on the threshold of the 20th anniversary of Armenia’s independence.
